7 Unique Trees You Should Totally Consider Planting

Popular trees, like Autumn Blaze Maple for shade or Techny Arborvitae for privacy, are great options! Diversifying your tree plantings is even better. It's worth considering something different when and wherever you can. A unique tree will have something different than most other trees. It will have characteristics that you just can't find anywhere else.

This is a list of some seriously underrated, unique trees worthy of your landscape.

Giphy of 7 Unique Trees

Hot Wings

Let's see, what makes Hot Wings special, you ask? It's not just any ol' maple tree. This maple tree is quite showy and unique, from its small white clusters of spring flowers to its more narrow leaf shape and its bright yellow to red-orange fall color. The character and charisma of this tree do not stop there! Hot Wings are safe to plant underneath utility lines, making them as versatile as they come! Come summer, this HOT tree will provide COOL shade, and it produces an interesting red-winged seed that will light up your landscape.

Norway Spruce

We know, spruce, unique? Really?

Hear us out. This is a highly-underrated tree, and in our opinion, it has unique characteristics, which means it makes this list! Norway Spruce is a top-performing evergreen. We love that it's more of a moderate grower while other evergreens tend to be slow-growing. Also, this is our most disease-resistant spruce tree available. On top of all of that, it's simply a beautiful and unique tree! Its branches curve upward as the tree ages, and its needles become heavy. This gives the tree a drooping appearance. This feature, accented by its dark green evergreen needles, adds to its beauty and uniqueness. Consider Norway Spruce for privacy, screening, or as a specimen in your yard.

Early Glow Ohio Buckeye

If you were to stumble upon this tree in the spring when it's in bloom or fall when it's on fire with brilliant red fall color, I think it's safe to say it'd be love at first sight. Early Glow is different than other Buckeyes. How is that, you ask? It has minimal fruit litter, which means it's more suitable for areas near driveways, sidewalks, and parkways.

Purple Catalpa

Underrated. There. We said it. Purple Catalpa is one of the most underrated, unique shade trees available. This tree will thrive just about anywhere. When we think of leaves changing, it's always in the fall. Purple Catalpa has a surprise in store when it leafs out HUGE deep purple, heart-shaped leaves that change to a bronze-green in the summer and eventually to yellow in the fall. The end of spring ushers big panicles of white flowers with yellow and purple spots.

Dawn Redwood

This tree screams TEXTURE! It's all about the soft feathery, needle-like leaves and their shaggy upright appearance. One of our favorite features of Dawn Redwood is its eye-catching peeling bark that reveals a reddish underlayer. Dawn Redwood is a deciduous conifer that takes on an evergreen appearance. Instead of staying green throughout fall and winter, its feathery needle-like leaves will turn a rusty red-orange in the fall and then drop, leaving its branches bare in winter. Once established, these trees are long-living and grow to be quite large. They need room to grow and enjoy open landscapes. These historic trees will add so much character to your home and tell a story for generations to come.

Purple Fountain Beech

Unique doesn't cut it. Purple Fountain Beech is a living sculpture! Plant this work of art in your yard or garden for a drape of incomparable texture and color. This tree will be an interesting talking point with its tight weeping branching and dark purple leaf color. This fast-growing beech only grows to be about 12 ft wide at full maturity and will fit in those odd places that need a little bit of pizzaz.

Perkins Pink

Perkins Pink matures to have a rounded crown and will be about 30 ft tall with a canopy spread of about 30 ft wide. Perkins Pink Yellowwood blooms in spring and takes on a weeping wisteria appearance. Perkins Pink's softly scented light pink flowers are a delightful sight to behold! This tree's enchanting appeal is perfect for garden areas, near patios, or anywhere shade is needed.
